Upon hearing about Beeton resident Madi Vanstone’s struggle with cystic fibrosis, many in the community have banded together to help her and her family pay for an expensive treatment.
On Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Beeton Park, Pat and Shannuna Jordan of Royal LePage will be dedicating their annual fundraiser to helping the 11-year-old Madi.
“We like to do an event once a year and we like to find things that help children in the community, that’s sort of how we’re geared with this, and last year we did a fundraiser for Joey who lives in Beeton,” Pat Jordan explained. “This year I read about Madi in the newspaper and I was like, ‘she’s from the area and we want to help’.”
Madi has been dealing with the effects of cystic fibrosis her entire life and recently started taking a medication to help her cope with the effects. However, the very expensive medication is currently not covered in Canada, but has the potential to greatly help Madi right away.
“There’s a lot of stuff going on right here at home,” Pat said. “Last year the fundraiser was phenomenal and people came out of the woodwork because it was for a local child. So we thought, ok, that’s where the heart is. We can see where it’s going and how it’s helping. So we decided to take the route again this year in helping Madi.”
Events throughout the day will include: a baseball tournament, possibly a horseshoe tournament (if more teams sign up), vendors, a large community bake table, a beer tent, concession booth, bouncy castle, silent auction and live entertainment by John McDermott, George Scott, Sean Bourke and Skyrish.
“They’ll all be donating their time, which is just fantastic, so the stage will be packed all day,” Pat said.
Organizers are calling for those in the community to donate any gifts for the silent auction and bake table if possible.
“That would be greatly appreciated,” Pat said. “Whether it’s a gift basket or gift certificates, the more we have the more money we can raise. Anyone can also contribute to the bake table. The more the better.”
Beeton councillor Richard Norcross has also heard about Madi’s story and is looking forward to the event. He also said he was happy that the community has come together to help out a family in need.
“It’s another great demonstration of a great community that we have and how we all work together and pull together for each other in times of need,” he said. “We’re very fortunate to live in such a great community and I’m proud to be a member of it.”
Pat, who has also worked in the community for a long time, echoed councillor Norcross’s sentiments.
“New Tec is such a fabulous community for coming together, so we kind of heard what they needed and that’s what we wanted to do,” she said.
“Being realtors, Shannuna and I get paid by this community solely. This is our one area and it is our responsibility to give back.”
