Dear editor:
Frequently in New Tecumseth the subject of water arises. It can be a touchy subject as water is scarce in some parts of the town. Indeed it was one of the reasons the Collingwood Alliston pipeline was built.
Since that time groups such as AWARE have attempted to keep a close eye on its quality. However they are having a difficult job as County Council, our Mayor and Deputy Mayor being members, have consistently attempted to block all AWARE’s requests to have some say when they are discussing such things as water and its phosphorous levels. It would appear that County Council who are representing our welfare don’t appear to want to allow the people to have any input into subjects that we the people feel are in our best interests.
When there was talk of increasing the size of the quarry in King at the foot of the Tottenham road; a move that would have a direct effect on our water supply our Councillors were silent. This matter is still unresolved.
Recently on a visit to the Mill Street and WillowGlen sub division I asked where they were going to get their water supply. It would appear that they are drilling a second well into the aquifer next to the existing well as the Beeton to Tottenham pipeline has not even been started.
A large part of the WillowGlen sub division lies on the Oakridges Moraine I only hope that our engineers have consulted with the Moraine people to determine the effect on existing wells. When the Pines was built well levels as far as the 10th Sideroad dropped 8 feet. A similar drop could leave many well owners with no water. Such a blunder could be very expensive to correct and Alliston would probably have to find the money to do so.
