Two weeks ago, the event ‘Bootcamp for Sarah’ took place at the Tottenham Community & Fitness Centre. The event drew 70 participants, including kids, friends, family, and strangers – all coming together for an afternoon of exercise, as led by fitness expert Tara Vavala, in support of Sarah Hamby, an 8-year-old Beeton resident with Leukaemia. Bootcampers raised $5,000 for the girl, through registration fees, a silent auction table and anonymous donations. “There are no words to explain the depth of gratitude,” said event co-organizer, Candy Dell. Sarah was originally diagnosed in October of 2012. After a three-year treatment plan, she was given the all clear, and went on a European Disney cruise. The Hambys were getting back to normal life, continuing with regular checkups, but the cancer came back one year later. Sarah’s second round with cancer is more intense, and the treatment plan is uncertain.
