The Town of New Tecumseth is very fortunate to have a wildlife sanctuary right in our own backyards. Our residents don’t have to make hundreds of phone calls or drive hundreds of kilometres when they find orphaned or injured wild animals that require immediate care.
Procyon Wildlife Veterinary and Rehabilitation Services is very conveniently located in Beeton, just south of town, at 6441 7th Line. That’s just minutes from Alliston, Beeton, and Tottenham. But Procyon Wildlife doesn’t just take animals from our local area. Procyon Wildlife saves animals from all over southern Ontario. Furthermore, Procyon Wildlife is one of only a few wildlife rehabilitation centres that boasts a full service veterinary hospital on site. This means that sick and injured animals can receive immediate emergency medical and surgical care without having to travel to local dog and cat hospitals that smell of domestic predators. Our veterinary hospital enables us to save hundreds of lives each year that would otherwise be lost due to illness, injury and starvation.
Well, that’s the good news. The bad news is that, like all other wildlife sanctuaries, Procyon Wildlife receives no government funding. We rely solely on donations and volunteers to care for the more than one thousand animals admitted to our facility each year. Thanks to the support of animal rescuers, local animal shelters, and concerned animal lovers, we are able to raise the funds that we need each year to keep our doors open.
One source of funding for Procyon Wildlife is competition for grants and corporate giving each year. These resources provide us with funding for large projects that cost tens of thousands of dollars, projects such as building cages and paying to maintain our hospital. This year we are involved in a competition sponsored by Aviva Insurance Brokers. The Competition is called the Aviva Community Fund. We have applied for a $50,000 grant to help us build a veterinary isolation unit. To win our grant, we compete through the Aviva website for public votes. The projects with the most votes have a chance to win their funding.
You can help! Just follow this link to our project: http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf17171. Once you are on the Aviva website, you register using your email address and a password. Voting begins on Monday, October 21 at noon. You will be given 15 votes. You can use one vote per project each day. It’s important to know that if you don’t vote, that vote will be lost and cannot be used at a later time. If we are in the top 10 projects, we will move to the semi-final round and the voting cycle will be repeated to choose 10 finalists. The 10 finalists will be judged by Aviva judges and, if we are chosen, we will win $50,000. If you need help registering or voting, just call us at 905-729-0033 or email procyonwildlife@295.ca
So vote for us to win and remember, the real winners are the animals that will be saved with your help.
