Home concerts are becoming a neat little trend throughout the country and some local residents are getting involved.
Carrie and Chris Turman, both musicians themselves, will be hosting a series of concerts in their Tottenham home from the fall and into the spring as part of the Home Routes tour going across Canada.
“We went to a few and were guests in someone’s home and thought it was a super cool concept,” said Carrie. “My husband and I have been part of a band/group that toured around for years, so we appreciate good music and how it’s hard to create that sort of special atmosphere with your audience that is like the home.”
The first concert will take place on Sept. 25, when the couple will welcome Alberta based band 100 Mile House.
The three-member band is known for harmonies and folk roots tunes that have garnered attention across the country.
They have also played at some high profile events including the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, the Calgary Folk Club, the Canmore Folk Festival and also have some of their live recordings available on CBC Radio.
Turman said she is excited to have the concert series in her home to support Canadian musicians and hopes it will bring people together in the community.
“It’s about sharing great music and providing it to the community,” she said. “We thought it was a great way to get to know more people in the community and share some good music.”
As hosts of the concert series, the Turman’s also provide accommodations for the bands and musicians as they come through town, which is an interesting concept that allows musicians to easily and safely travel around to spread their music.
“They get to do their show, sell their CDs and they get to put their music out there,” she said. “Get to know your audience and let them get to know you.”
The performers come from all over Canada and are auditioned by Home Routes. Turman said that most of the bands are awarding winning.
“The first one [home concert] I went to, I just remember being blown away by such talent,” she said. “Sometimes people with such high talent just don’t get around and you don’t hear about them, so this is good for them.”
As a musician herself, she said it’s hard to create that homey atmosphere that musicians love, but this is the best way to achieve that.
“People would come to our home many times to listen to us jam and they would say, ‘I wish I could take you home with me.’ We felt we wanted to do the same thing and help support this kind of music and invite the community into our home.”
The Turman’s will be hosting shows on Sept. 25, Oct. 25, Nov. 23, Feb. 9, Mar. 11 and Apr. 9.

DATE CORRECTION:
Owing to an unfortunate scheduling conflict, the house concert in Tottenham with “100 Mile House” has been moved to Tuesday, September 24, 2013 instead of Wednesday. The new series dates are Sept. 24, Oct. 25 (no change), Nov. 22, Feb. 8, Mar. 9 and Apr. 8. Please contact carrie@behelpful.ca or chris@turman.ca for more information. If you can’t make it that day we’ll find out where you can see any of the groups. We’re really sorry for the confusion which, by the way, had nothing to do with the newspaper.
Thanks everyone for your interest and support. It looks like we’ve got a full house for this week’s (Sep-24) concert. If you still want to see the group then contact either Carrie or Chris at either email address above and we’ll let you know where.
