The Georgian Mid Ontario Junior C Hockey League started the 2015 / 16 season with the first games getting underway this past week.
The Alliston Junior C Hornets had their home opener on Friday, September 18, and it handed the squad their first loss of the season to the Midland Flyers.
The game got off to a slow start with both teams having some chances but it was Midland who opened the scoring with the only goal in the first period coming at the midway mark in the frame.
Alliston’s Joe Cochrane tied it up on a powerplay early in the second period but a second Midland goal on a shorthanded effort gave the visitors a 2–1 lead going into the final 20 minutes.
The Hornets couldn’t get back in the game and a final Midland goal with seven seconds left on the clock gave the Flyers a 3–1 win.
It was the second Midland win of the season – that’s pretty good for a team who only won 11 games all last season.
The Hornets are the defending GMOHL champions after winning the League title last season.
The Hornets roster shows a good line-up of returning talent as well as some newly acquired players that should produce good results this season.
Other opening games in the League had the Schomberg Cougars winning 4–2 over the Stayner Siskins and the Huntsville Otters winning 5–3 over the Orillia Terriers.
The Hornets will be back on home ice this Friday, September 24, when they will host the Schomberg Cougars at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre.
The puck drop for that game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
