The Alliston Junior C Hornets moved into second place in the Georgian Mid Ontario hockey League after winning both games this past week.
The squad travelled to Stayner on Thursday, October 1, and left with a 5–2 win over the Siskins.
Returning to Alliston on Sunday, October 4, the Alliston squad delivered a devastating 7–1 win over the Penetang Kings in their first meeting of the season.
The Hornets wasted no time in taking control of the ice in Sunday’s game with a first period goal from Brady Martin.
It was the second period that really saw the Hornets take charge of the game swarming the Penetang net and keeping up the pressure for the full frame.
The Hornets went ahead by two on a goal from Stephen Nosad who took the feed across the front of the net from John Gage.
Jacob Tuck got the second Alliston goal at the 5:55 mark into the period.
Nosad notched his second of the game on a powerplay – the only Alliston powerplay in the period.
The game saw no penalties in the first period and ten minutes in the box for the Hornets and four minutes in minors for Penetang for the game.
“We had a strong outing on Thursday against Stayner and we wanted to carry it over and bring the same positives we had in that game to this game tonight,” said Hornets forward Brady Martin. “We’re kind of rolling out ourselves here, so we’re getting stuff going and I really like what I’m seeing from the team.”
Martin scored his second of the game at 1:47 into the third period.
The Kings avoided the shut-out with a blooper of a goal that tricked over the goal line in the third.
Alliston responded with two more third period goals from Jordan Schwartz and Francesco Corona to end the game 7–1.
“We started off the first ten minutes very strong, then they started to pick it back up so the word after the first (period) was obviously we’ve got to keep the same momentum as we had in the first ten. I think we kept that up. It was really hard for them to compete with us. I felt we had really good performance all throughout the game,” Brady said.
After the weekend the Midland Flyers are in first place with a 6–1 record. So far this season the Flyers have been the big surprise winning six games. Last year they finished in the basement winning only 11 games all season and failing to make the playoffs.
Penetang has now dropped to third place after the Sunday loss. They are followed by the Huntsville Otters and the Schomberg Cougars.
The Erin Shamrocks are in the number six spot followed by the Stayner Siskins.
Orillia and Caledon and at the bottom with both teams winless so far this year.
The Hornets will be back on home ice this Friday, October 9, when the host the Caledon Golden Hawks.
The puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
