The Alliston Junior C Hornets moved into first place in the Georgian Mid Ontario Junior C Hockey League with a 7–0 shut-out over the Midland Flyers on Saturday (Oct. 10) night.
The Flyers had been in the top spot after starting the season strong and losing only one game before meeting the Hornets on the weekend.
It was the second game in a row the Hornets left the ice with no goals scored against them.
They shut-out the Caledon Golden Hawks 4–0 on Friday (Oct. 9) night at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre.
Friday’s game started out a little slow with the first period ending scoreless.
It wasn’t until the second period that saw the scoreboard light up when Hornets forward Francesco Corona picked up a rebound from a shot from the point to put the Allison squad up one.
Joe Cochrane made it a 2–0 game late in the period when he went head on with the Caledon goalie then made a nicely calculated shot to the top of the net to score.
The Hornets were ahead by three just 11 seconds later when Nick Arcan took the shot right off the face off that made it into the Caledon net.
The Golden Hawks were hurting by the time they came out for the third fame. The Hawks showed up with a short bench and were rolling two lines all night long.
“I thought we came out a little slow for our liking but the boys regrouped and made a plane to come out hard in the second period,” said Hornets forward Francesco Corona. “As the period went on we started making effort to get goals and finally we cracked on the powerplay.”
The Hornets were well aware that the Hawks were short benched and took advantage of that.
“We had a game plan to move our feet and out-muscle them and wear them down during the game and I thought we did a pretty good job,” Corona said. “As the game went on they showed a little more fatigue. We did a really good job of running our lines and using strategy to keep things rolling and keep us as fresh as we can be.”
The Hornets were already preparing for the Saturday night game in Midland. Alliston’s only loss this season was to Midland in the first game of the season.
“We know that they had our number this year (in the first game of the season) and know that we have to come out hard. We kind of have a chip on our shoulder, we want to take back the number one spot in the League and give them a good fight over there.”
After the weekend the Hornets have a 7–1 record for the season.
The Hornets will return to home ice this Friday, October 16, to host the Erin Shamrocks.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
