The Alliston Junior C Hornets left the ice with two more points after dispatching the Huntsville Otters 7-1 Friday (Jan. 15) night at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre in Alliston.
The Hornets opened the scoring on a goal from Nick Arcan early in the first period.
They followed up with a devastating second frame that saw the Alliston squad four unanswered goals to lead the game 5-0 going into the final 20 minutes of play.
Alliston goals came from Joe Cochrane, John Gage, Will Ferguson, and Stephen Nosad.
By the time the third period got started the Orillia team looked like they were gassed with most of the play taking place in their end.
The Hornets had a lot of third period chances and several two-on-ones when they broke though the Otters defence.
The Hornets out-shot their foes 54-21 for the game.
“They came at us hard and they were working hard out there but we just won the little battles and out worked them and capitalized on our chances,” said Hornets forward John Gage. “We were really trying to be aggressive on our penalty kills to make them make mistakes when they don’t want to. On our power play we wanted to have a net presence and bang in some rebounds.”
Despite peppering the Huntsville goalie with shots, the Hornets didn’t have any power play goals in the game.
When the Otters had the man advantage the Alliston squad gave them little chance to even get a shot on net.
“They had a lot of penalties – we wore them down,” Gage said. “We were just trying to work hard and win all the battles we can. When we work as hard as we do then we wear the other team down and they have a hard time keeping up with us.”
The Hornets maintain a solid first place in the Georgian Mid Ontario Junior C Hockey League with a 31-2-2 record – good for 64 points.
That’s 25 points ahead of the second place Huntsville Otters.
The Hornets will return to home ice on Friday, Jan. 22, to host the Stayner Siskins.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
