Sixteen teams turn out for annual pre-season battle

Junior C hockey clubs from around the province got a pre-season workout at the annual Alliston Hornets tournament held at the New Tecumseth Recreation Complex in Alliston.

The Hornets started off on Thursday night with game one against the Orillia Terriers and left with a 4–0 win to start the tournament.

The Terriers are a first year club in the Georgian Mid Ontario hockey loop.

Alliston followed up with a second win over Port Hope leaving the ice with a 3–2 win to advance to the semi-final.

A shoot-out in their game against the Port Perry Mojacks ended the Hornets weekend when the game finished the third period with a tie. The Mojacks came out on top in the shoot-out to take the win and advance to the final game against the Campbellford Rebels.

The Rebels claimed the tournament title with a 4–3 win.

With the regular season starting this week the Hornets are close to completing the roster for 2013 / 2014.

“We have 19 players signed. We’re going to take 21,” said Hornets General Manager Rick Bartlett.

The squad has 11 returning player from last season and several who have signed on from clubs around the region.

“We have one from Grey Bruce AAA, one kid from North Central AAA, and four from Barrie AAA,” Bartlett said.

With nine players new to the team it will take a few games to see how the squad gels this year.

The Hornets are the defending six-time GMOHL champions.

The line-up will include one 16 year-old, as yet unsigned player.

“We haven’t signed one yet, but we’ll probably sign one this weekend. We want to have our team set by Monday. On Monday night we want to have out team in the dressing room for practice and ready for our first game in Schomberg on Thursday.

The GMOHL has expanded against this season with the addition of the Orillia Terriers making it a ten team league playing in three divisions.

The Hornets season will get underway on Thursday, September 12, with the first game on the road against the Schomberg Cougars.

The return to home ice the following night, Friday, September 13, to host the Stayner Siskins for the Alliston home opener.

The puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
