The TNT Express Varsity squad won their first game of the season over the Orangeville Outlaws with an unbelievable last second touchdown that saw the Express score the points after the clock had run out but the play was still going on.
The touchdown brought the score to within a single point and since the convert is of part of the game, the successful kick tied the game at 14 with the clock reading double zeros.
The Express went on to win the game 27–21 in overtime.
TNT’s Colin Hall scored the TD and kicked the successful convert to force the game into extra time.
In fact Hall scored the earlier Express touchdown in the first quarter after taking a long pass from quarterback Andrew Tee to give the TNT squad an early 6–0 lead.
The Outlaws were leading early in the second quarter after crossing the goal twice and making good on the one point convert.
Starting the second half with the kick, the Express found themselves deep in their own end and unable to dig their way out.
The turn over resulted in some solid defensive work including a big-time QB sack by Mitchell Johnson.
Another quarterback sack came from Tyler Kraly midway in the quarter.
An Outlaw fumble gave the ball back to the Express and the squad made some big gains including a long run by Brian Palmer.
With the clock ticking down and the Orangeville team already celebrating the win, the Express turned it up a notch and suddenly came into scoring distance on a quarterback sneak by Andrew Tee.
Hall scored the TD to tie it up and the teams went into overtime.
The overtime play took place on the north end of the field with Orangeville scoring on their first attempt.
With the ball now in TNT’s possession, Matt Biamonte caught a pass in the end zone to keep the Express alive.
The game ended with Orangeville’s next attempt and a pass interception by Gary Valentini that stopped the Outlaws and ended the game.
It was the Express first game and first win of the season.
The final was 27–21 for the Express.
“I’ve never seen overtime,” said Express varsity head coach Mario Addorisio. “At least not since I’ve been with TNT.”
Obviously happy with the results, Addorisio said that scoring with the clock on zeros is unusual but part of the game.
“You get that last play no matter what,” he said of the fact that in football, even when the clock runs out the play continues until forward motion is stopped and the whistle blows. “My hat’s off to the boys for not giving up, right to the end.”
The Express Varsity team will play two games on the road – one against the Rexdale Raiders – and one against the Cambridge Lions.
They return home to Mel Mitchel field in Beeton on Sunday, June 16, to host their arch rivals, the Steel City Steelers, from Hamilton.
The kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
