Ideas on waste management ready for the recycle bin

Residents at 77 Mill Street East in Tottenham may have won a small battle with regards to the way their recyclables are collected.

Under the new waste management agreement with the County of Simcoe, recycling at multi-family locations was to be collected on a fee per service basis. Questioning this change, building management 77 Mill Street won an earlier victory, resulting in the County agreeing to collect 2 of their 9 caddy carts for free, the rest of the materials would need to be placed in individual blue boxes if it was to be collected at no cost.

Management ordered the necessary 86 recycle bins that would normally be placed in the additional 7 bins.

This resulted in a visible eye sore along Mill Street, as well as a potential safety hazard for the municipality, as the bins were unprotected from the wind generated from the adjacent open field.

Building management, working with BFI/Progressive – the contractor who holds the waste collection agreement with the County of Simcoe – questioned why the County would pay for a special truck to collect only 2 of the 9 bins for free. They also wanted to know why the County would choose to pay BFI/Progressive to pick up and dump the 86 smaller blue boxes instead.

Through active conversation with the Mayor of the Town of New Tecumseth, the County of Simcoe, BFI/Progressive and The Times of New Tecumseth, a reasonable solution may be in the works.

“I can confirm that we have now received a verbal proposal from BFI that will allow multiple cart collection of recyclables from multi-family locations at no additional costs,” Rob McCullough, Director Solid Waste Management for the County of Simcoe told The Times in an e-mail Tuesday. “This will require some changes to the days of collection for those complexes and we are working out the details of the proposal now. We hope to have a report prepared for County Council’s consideration in September. In the meantime we have informed the complex at 77 Mill Street that they can continue to utilize their carts while we await Council’s decision.”

Building management at 77 Mill Street confirms that the conversation on the matter is pushing forward and they anticipate a positive outcome following councils review of the matter next month.

They will put the 9 caddy carts out for collection next week, on their new garbage day.
