Independent Living Services of Simcoe County and Area (ILS) is a local charity and Association that was formed in1978 to provide support and services to people with physical disabilities in Simcoe County to assist them to lead dignified, productive and independent lives.
The organization is governed by a local Board of Directors who are elected by the Association’s membership of over 70 interested community members. It has changed its name over the years to reflect the changes in our community and the programs we offer.
Elaine House was one of the first major programs of the agency, offering a safe living environment for people with significant physical disabilities outside of long term care facilities, or living with family members. ILS also initiated the BACTS accessibility transportation system in Barrie in 1981. As this transportation programs grew, it was transferred to the City of Barrie in 1991 as part of the municipal transportation system.
The programs offered by ILS include Attendant Care services for adults with physical disabilities across Simcoe County. There are several different types of program options with the Attendant Care program based on client needs and demand for the service. Recently, the organization started a specialized program for seniors living in Barrie’s east end who require ongoing supports to live at home.
The Association also offers support in accessing new and used assistive devices, and supports for accessible renovations to homes and buildings.
“We support and initiate local projects which support our vision of a welcoming community regardless of physical ability,” reads a ststement from ILS.
Funding for these programs is provided through the North Simcoe Muskoka Local Health Integration Network, the United Way of Greater Simcoe County, fundraising efforts, donations, grants and membership fees in the Association.
