Is a vehicle purchased in Brantford serviced in Brantford?

Dear editor:

Mr. Vant Spyker’s letter regarding his tendering experience emphasizes what I have been saying all along that we need to have an alliance between small business and the municipality to promote jobs within our community.

We should be spending the towns money whenever practical in our own town. Frankly I am surprised that the Chamber of Commerce have not raised this subject with the Mayor before this. However if you don’t care whether or not the council supports small business or the fact that the municipality is competing against small business using municipal subsidies; well then who cares. Now I know that there are rules that must be followed in tendering but why are we going so far afield as Brantford?

When we brought in the free trade agreement between the U.S.A. and Canada we created a first class headache for those engaged in the procurement process because tenders had to be written so that people in both country’s could bid on them. As a result you could not be specific regarding a product or manufacturer as a result you could wind up with a product that you didn’t want.

Presently our government is getting involved in international free trade just think what it is going to be like when our procurement people go out to obtain a road grader or fleet of trucks and wind up with a product manufactured in lower Slobovia for which they have no supporting spares. What we hear from the Federal government is that this could apply to purchasing right down to the municipal level. Your worst nightmare is when you have a commingled back up spares inventory.

As our Mayor apparently believes in buying equipment in Brantford with New Tecumseth’s money pray tell is he going to send it there for servicing or is he going to park it on Mr. Vant Spyker’s doorstep? Surely you don’t have the gall to expect this gentleman to supply the capital to carry the inventory in the pipeline to keep your vehicles serviceable at all times. Is there any wonder that there is a growing ground swell of people who believe that the entire Council must be changed. Some locals are even going so far as to say we need a different type of Council as this one does not seem to work.

T. Carter
