Dear editor:
A public response to Mayor Tom Walsh on his recent message in the Adjala-Tosorontio News.
Dear Mayor Walsh:
There seems to be a clear disconnect between your perception of what is needed in Adjala-Tosorontio and what residents believe is needed. Your idea of growth clearly does not meet the aspirations of the residents of Everett while our polls show that over 80% of its population stands united against the Official Plan Amendment 10.
You mention ‘some fears’ about the plan as if to trivialize what is for us no laughing matter. Urban sprawl, and with it increased taxes, pollution, traffic, and crime, not mentioning the loss of agricultural land, are amongst ‘some fears’ we anticipate could become reality with this scheme to push Everett through such a drastic population intensification. These fears are not guessed but educated, and they are certainly no matter for trivialization.
As if the first paragraph of your message was not good enough, you condescend to improve on it by greenwashing your plan as “…greater environmental benefits such as improvements to the Pine River…” Really? The treated effluent of 11,000 people will be better on the Pine? We had no idea!
Lastly you write that the “Council and Staff will continue to work diligently with our residents…” We quote from the agreement between the Township and Walton International dated November 5th, 2012: “and whereas Walton is desirous of the Township initiating a Secondary Plan for the Community of Everett”. Because the Calgary-based and internationally-financed land-banking investment company is desirous of a Secondary Plan in Everett, should the residents be forced into desiring the same? Is that why you are so bent on planting rows of houses in lieu of potatoes? Is that what is called working with the residents?
