The 8th Annual Kevin Lord Memorial Spring Classic golf tournament is coming up once again this year.
The tournament is a four player team scramble and will be taking place at the Nottawasaga Golf Course on May 31 for a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
For $125, participants get 18 holes of golf, a cart and a steak dinner.
The Kevin Lord Memorial Foundation was established in 2007 in the memory of Kevin, a New Tecumseth resident who passed away in April 2006 after a year-long battle with brain cancer.
To date the Kevin Lord Memorial Foundation has raised over $80,000 in support of many local charities, including: The Brain Tumour Foundation Of Canada; Royal Victoria Hospital Cancer Centre; New Tecumseth Minor Ball Hockey League, FAB (Funds For A New Arena In Beeton); Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation; Matthews House Hospice; The Nottawasaga Foundation; Camp Oochigeas (Camp For Children With Cancer); Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation; Ewings Cancer Foundation Of Canada; Breast Cancer Foundation Of Canada; Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life (Alliston); Princess Margaret Hospital Ride to Conquer Cancer; Beeton Firefighters Association; Links For Learning Scholarship Fund (New Tecumseth); Families of Cole Woodward, Jaida Cumberland, Randy Foley, Joey Gallinger and Madi Vanstone.
A well known athlete, Kevin played junior A hockey with the Newmarket Hurricanes and also competed in the 2004 World Junior Ball Hockey Championship in Slovakia. Both teams have retired his number in his memory.
“The first year after Kevin passed away, it was our daughter Lindsay who suggested holding a fundraiser in his memory to raise money specifically for Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie, who cared for him and who were fundraising at that time for the new Simcoe Regional Cancer Centre that was being built and now open,” said Kevin’s father, Al. “Since then, the fundraising effort has continued to support many other worthy causes.”
The golf tournament is held in May every year, which is close to his birthday and when he passed away.
“It’s always a sad time of the year for our family,” Al said. “But holding the golf tournament fundraiser every year around the same time helps us to refocus in a positive way by being proud of everyone’s support and what is being achieved in his memory.”
You can also support the event by donating a prize or sponsoring a hole for $100. That includes a sign with your or your company’s name and logo displayed on one of the 18 holes. Contact Al by May 24 in order to allow time to have your sign made.
