The Kevin Lord Memorial Foundation has again given its annual Memorial Award and Scholarship to a New Tecumseth Ball Hockey League (NTBHL) player.
This year’s recipient is Rylan McConnell, a U19 player who has completed his Junior year in ball hockey.
The award is given to a player who is going on to post-secondary education and has brought distinction to the sport through outstanding individual athletic achievement, and who best exemplifies excellence in leadership, character, sportsmanship, and selfless contribution to the NTBHL.
“We do a golf tournament fundraiser every year,” explained Al Lord, Chair of the Kevin Lord Memorial Foundation. “From the fundraiser I donate $1,000 to the scholarship fund. This is our 18th year. It starts out when the kids start playing ball hockey at a young age. There’s a list of all these criteria and there are nominees. Each kid has to write an essay on why they believe they deserve this award. It’s a very coveted award because it is awarded in their last year as a junior.”
Rylan is planning on attending Georgian College to study HVAC.
“I’ve been playing ball hockey for the last 16 years – since I was a little kid,” Ryan said. “There’s a lot of running and a lot of fun and a lot of different people. I heard about this award a couple of years [into] hockey. For ball hockey I’ve gone to nationals a couple of times and the provincials a lot of times to get there. It’s been a lot of fun. I’ll continue to play ball hockey in the men’s division. I’ll be going to Georgian College in the fall for HVAC.”
The Award is intended to help a student with the costs of post-secondary education.
