Members of the 734 Squadron Air Cadets (Alliston) took part in 75th Anniversary ceremonies in remembrance of the Battle of Britain on Sunday in Barrie. The parade marched on at 10:40 a.m. along Dunlop Street. There was a minute of silence, followed by wreath laying. At 11 a.m. was a march past, and march off was 11:15 a.m. The parade was attended by WWII veterans, Colonel Yve Thomson of 16 Wing Base Borden, armed forces from 16 Wing Base Borden, two air cadet squadrons, and Barrie Pipes and Drums. The Battle of Britain took place between July 10 and Oct. 31, 1940. The German plan was to fly across the English Channel and destroy British airfields. If the Nazi’s had of succeeded in taking over Britain, Commonwealth countries such as Canada, Australia, and South Africa, would have no way of flying in support, which would have led to Germany winning WWII.
