Dear editor:
To: The Mayor and Council of New Tecumseth
As concerned citizens of Beeton, we are tired of being overlooked and forgotten when it comes to public safety, health care and infrastructure issues. We may be the smallest of the three centres, but we have found our voice.
For the past 2 years, we have appealed to the council to eliminate or cut back on tractor trailer traffic and dump truck traffic hauling large loads through the middle of town. Main Street, as well as the many stores and homes on this road were never constructed or designed to carry the volume or tonnage or traffic these rigs brings. The exception to this rule will continue to be Dorsey Farms as well as W.D. Potatoes and any delivery trucks delivering supplies to our stores.
Over the past months, the increase of big rigs and dump trucks through town at all hours of the day and night has risen at an alarming rate. Was not Industrial Road in Alliston specifically designed and built to handle this traffic serving Honda and the new housing projects in Alliston?
This past Friday August 16, a woman was seriously injured and her dog killed while attempting to cross Main Street during rush hour. We witnessed tractor trailers trying to manoeuvre around her as she laid on the pavement; screaming in pain, many truck tires coming within a hand’s width of her legs. Cars parked illegally at the corners of Main and Centre seriously blocking vision for people crossing the road as well as traffic trying to gain access to Main Street.
It took almost 40 minutes for police to arrive on scene; traffic continuing to drive around the accident scene and destroying any evidence. It was only several concerned citizens that actually attempted to divert traffic around the scene. Many thanks to the paramedics and fire department that arrived within minutes to provide support and care.
It is time that truck traffic, speeders breaking red lights and driver’s racing on Main Street be reduced or put to an end.
We would like to see a set of lights be installed at Centre and Main Street for the safety of the public. Parents remember; school will be starting in a few weeks; keeping our children safe must be a priority.
We would like to see at least a 15–20 minute response time for serious accidents on our roads.
We no longer accept being the Industrial Road of the south in New Tecumseth.
We need action taken now before another serious event takes place.
