The Matthews House Hospice H.U.G.S. (Helping Understand Grief Sessions) program for children helps to answer the questions that children ask after the death of a loved one.
As caregivers, teachers, parents and friends, these can be difficult questions to answer. The HUGS program provides support for children and teens who are grieving the death of a loved one. The program is offered through six one hour sessions that are run consecutively and expands four basic concepts: bereavement; emotions; progress; and continuing. Children are encouraged, in a safe environment, to express their feelings through art therapy, crafts, music, dance, poetry and play. In doing so, they learn to identify and express their feelings and numerous emotions that accompany their sadness. There is no cost to families but parents or caregivers are asked to commit to all six sessions so that the children will benefit as they journey through their own grieving process.
