When you cast your ballot on October 27th, you’ll be voting on more than a municipal issue.
Council passed a motion Monday night to ensure that the voting public is made aware that any vote for ‘Mayor’ or ‘Deputy Mayor’ will also determine the makeup of our County Council – a group that controls a budget bigger than any Lotto Max windfall.
Under the County of Simcoe governance structure, those elected to the position of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in any of the 16 member municipalities are also automatically elected to serve as a member of Simcoe County Council.
The Town of New Tecumseth had requested that the name on the ballot be officially changed from ‘Mayor’ to ‘Mayor/County Councillor’ and from ‘Deputy Mayor’ to ‘Deputy Mayor/County Councillor’ this fall, but the request was denied by the Simcoe County Clerks and Treasurers Association (supported by a legal opinion) as the provisions of the Municipal Elections Act would not allow for this change.
At the municipal level, council has approved a motion that will ensure those running for either of the top two positions are informed of the additional responsibilities in the candidates’ package.
Members of the public who want to find out more before casting their vote, can find an information sheet (provided by the Simcoe County Clerks office) on our website at: www.newtectimes.com or at the Town of New Tecumseth website, by following this link: http://newtecumseth.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Candidates-for-Mayor-and-Deputy-Mayor-COS-Info-Sheet-2013.pdf
