Mayor happy with changes to waste collection

New Tecumseth’s Mayor Mike MacEachern expressed his satisfaction with changes to Simcoe County’s waste collection policy which will return curb side waste collection for a number of multiple residential buildings in New Tecumseth and the rest of Simcoe County.

“The county has come up with a fair way to this issue which affected a number of properties in our town especially in Tottenham. I’d like to thank staff for its work,” he said.

After the change in waste collection in April, a number of multiple residential units which had been having their garbage picked up by the county were cut off or down to one bag per unit. With the change to a levy based on assessment, property owners were seeing an increased levy and  reduced collection.

Springwater Deputy Mayor Dan MacLean said that he felt that the issue of multiple-residential pickup should be further discussed at a special meeting of county council to be held on June 27. “We are looking at a pickup of a lot  of bags,” he said.

But county waste staff noted that the by-law which will also continue garbage pickup for a number of properties on private roads and on islands needed to be put in place for the coming summer season.

Multiple residential units will be required to allow the placement of waste at easily accessible points for the county trucks for pickup and that the areas will be carefully monitored to ensure that abuses do not take place. Subsidies may be issue if access is unavailable for the county’s waste pickup provider.
