Mayor MacEachern wins Sophie’s Sweets Cupcake eating Contest by a landslide

Sophie’s Sweets Café and Cake Shoppe hosted a cupcake eating contest at the Alliston Potato festival, donating 127 cupcakes to the event.

Sophie’s Sweets specializes in custom cakes, made with no preservatives. Their commitment to making their cakes fresh limits the amount of orders possible on a given day, but for owners Carlos and Teresa Trivino, quality is more important than quantity.

The vanilla and chocolate cupcakes for the Potato Festival contest were baked fresh Saturday morning. Contestants had three minutes to eat six full-sized cupcakes, complete with icing. The crowd went wild watching the frenzy, where the Mayor of New Tecumseth, Mike MacEachern and Deputy Mayor Rick Milne were part of the competition.

MacEachern took first place by a landslide for the adult round, but the two kids contests had the crowd howling even more with laughter. First place for round one went to Marion (10) while her sister, Emily (8), took second. The youngest members of the panel were dancing to the music and playing to the audience while stuffing their faces with as much cupcakes as they could hold. The second round left contestants covered in icing, first place going to Ryan (14) and second place going to an enthusiastic Alana (15).

“For us it’s something good to do for the community,” says owner, Carlos Trivino, who was happy to donate the cupcakes for the enjoyment of others. There was no registration fee for the contest this year, but Carlos says next year he hopes to raise money through the event for charity.

Sophie’s Sweets opened in Alliston last year, and recently moved to its current location on Victoria Street. With more space, Carlos and Teresa were able to expand their menu, now offering light lunch items such as sandwiches and soups. A new cupcake milkshake helps to show the unique service that Sophie’s Sweets can provide.
