The newly minted Misfit Militia Roller Derby League, representing Alliston and area, will be looking to avenge their fourth place finish at last year’s RDAC Eastern Regional Tournament. The Roller Derby Association of Canada (RDAC), which governs the sport of Roller Derby across Canada, has organized the 2013 Eastern Regional Tournament in Windsor, Ontario for this weekend, June 14 and 15th. The tournament will be hosted by the Border City Brawlers of Windsor and will take place at the WFCU Centre, home of the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires.
The tournament will be double elimination format and will feature six teams representing their leagues from all across Ontario. The teams are the Misfit Militia representing the Alliston area, Northern Ontario Roller Derby’s Wild Cards representing all of northern Ontario, Nickel City’s Sister Slag representing Sudbury, GTA Rollergirls G-sTAR’s representing the Greater Toronto Area, Durham Region Roller Derby’s Derby Devils representing Durham and finally the host Border City Brawlers. Both the first and second place teams will be representing the Eastern Region in the upcoming national tournament later this year.
The Misfit Militia are ranked 1st in the seeding and will be given a bye in the opening round and will play the winner of the 9am bout between the Wild Cards and Sister Slag. The Misfits will take on the winner at 1 p.m.
At last year’s RDAC Eastern Regional Tournament in Guelph, the Misfit Militia finished a disappointing 4th place, which for a first year team is an amazing accomplishment, but the Misfits had leads in both of their final two bouts before losing by 10 to the Bay St. Bruisers of Toronto Roller Derby and by 61 to the host Brute-Leggers of Royal City Roller Girls. Rest assured, nothing less than a first place finish and an opportunity to compete for the RDAC National Title will be the goal.
The Misfit Militia will sport their recently revamped roster at the tournament. The roster is lead by team captain Renny Rumble and features a strong blocking core anchored by Nancy Noir, Dezz STROYHer and Terry Bomb and filled in with newcomers Slash N’ Burn and Mandi Blaze. The jamming core is strong again this year with Randy-Roll-Lin, Smoka-Cola and Zombabe leading the charge with MadMegz and Renny Rumble ready to step in if anything should go awry.
You can catch all of the action on www.canuckderbytv.com, which will be live broadcasting the entire tournament starting a 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, with the championship game going at 3pm on Sunday.
