Alliston’s first Flat Track Roller Derby team, the Misfit Militia, will be travelling down the 401 this weekend in a long-anticipated match up with the Rideau Valley Roller Girls’ Vixens. These two teams have been neck and neck in Flat Track Stats rankings over the last two seasons, despite having never met on the hallowed oval track.
The Militia squad is very much intact from 2013 and have had ample time to further strengthen their fundamentals and defense, which has become their trademark style of play. “The 2013 season was transitional for the Misfits,” says team captain Renny Rumble. “We had a short roster and only a few games, but we played our game strong and well and that was really important to set the tone for 2014.”
Returning this year for the Misfit Militia are MadMegz, Dezz-STROYHer, Terry Bomb, Nancy Noir, Red Hot, Turbo Tiff, Slash N’ Burn, Sara Phim and Bee Bee Magee (fresh off of a “ninth month lay-off”), with newcomers TRUCK and Pardy Crasher to form the Militia defense. The offense, looking to build on an impressive 2013 campaign, will once again be held down Randy-Roll-Lin, Smoka Cola and Bellefast, with MadMegz, Red Hot and RennyRumble ready to back them up if needed.
Rumble’s thoughts for the 2014 edition of the Misfits shows just how tight this group really is. “I think the Misfits are stronger than ever. We have been training hard through the off season and have two of our strongest blockers back from maternity leave. We also have some great additions this year. We have a lot to work on but the skills and abilities we have in our skaters amazes me.”
The Misfits are going to be in tough against the Vixens, who sit just ahead of them in the Canadian rankings in 7th to the Misfits 8th. “This will easily be the hardest game the Misfits have ever played,” cautions Rumble. “We are ranked eighth overall in Canada and our opponent is ranked seventh, so it will be a great match.” But pride shine through nonetheless. “I have faith in my girls and in the team as a whole. I know we have the ability to put up a good fight.”
The Vixens will be led by their veteran core of Sister Disaster, Margaret Choke, Semi-Precious (Murphy) and Soul Rekker.
The Militia were up in Ottawa last year to face the Sirens, a feeder team for the Vixens, and dispatched them through a solid contest by a 218 point margin.
