Dear editor:
The FAB group is continuing fundraising for a new Leisure and Training Centre in Beeton to replace the old Memorial Arena and Community Centre. They were encouraged by the recent federal budget announcement of pending Infrastructure ‘Building Canada’ grants. This program included Recreation Facilities.
This new Beeton Community Leisure and Sport Training Centre has been designed to meet the changing needs of a projected population growth in Beeton and surrounding area within New Tecumseth for the next 25 years and while being a unique facility to Beeton it forms part of the overall Parks and Recreation delivery structure in New Tecumseth.
Today’s approach to recreation and sport infrastructure development recognizes the value of integrating diverse recreation programming and services in one multi-use facility while creating destination experiences. This is good business and a sustainable approach to facility operations. The Beeton project builds on this philosophy and will create opportunities to provide enhanced recreational, cultural and sport programming for a diverse population. This new plan stimulates economic growth through sport tourism, excellence in sport training and offering a variety of revenue streams for future sustainability.
The latest approved plans would increase the number of programming spaces from two in the current facility to at least six programmable spaces in the new Multiplex design. The committee is investigating new multi-use sport training features and apparatus to accommodate a Centre for Sport Excellence for specific interest groups. New indoor and outdoor areas have been provided for the performing arts. The new centre would contain a Community hall with a kitchen, multi-purpose meeting rooms and storage for various user groups. There will be a heated viewing area for the main sport surface, a fitness/wellness facility, a walking track and concession.
An integral component of the design is the addition of a Multi-purpose Activity
Court (MAC). A portable MAC can be used year round and the portable walls can be adjusted to provide a variety of floor sizes. A multi-use floor can be installed quickly and easily while essentially transforming an ice or cement surface into a new programmable area that can accommodate a gymnasium style or simple sport floor that is suitable for many sporting activities and special events. Popular activities such as ball hockey, lacrosse, basketball, volleyball, racquet sports, indoor soccer and rollerblading could be programmed year round in Beeton.
A Multi-use leisure and sports excellence centre is the theme. Located in the hub of town, the Beeton facility is not only multi-functional internally but also has design features which create opportunities to link to the outside for sporting events such as basketball and special events. Activities in the linked D.A.Jones Library, the new proposed Town Square, Beeton Community Park and the surrounding downtown core will stimulate new partnerships and enhance quality programs.
The Beeton Community Leisure and Sports Training Centre has been planned to meet changing needs, be energy efficient and compliment an overall plan for recreation in the Town of New Tecumseth. It will be an important, sustainable asset in the community.
The Annual FAB Golf Tournament in support of this much needed facility will be held on Sunday, August 11th, at the Club at Bond Head. Check the website www.thefab.ca for details.
