OHA upholds protest in Schmalz Cup final

If you’ve been following the Schmalz Cup finals, you may have wondered why game one of the Essex 73’s / Picton Pirates Junior C provincial final series suddenly dropped off the official results stats after the game was already posted as a 4–1 win for the Pirates.

The game is going to be ‘re-started’ after a ruling by the Ontario Hockey Association upholding a protest filed by the Essex team following game one.

Game one of the final series was played on Saturday, April 20, with the Picton Pirates winning 4–1.

However the Essex 73’s file a protest the following day.

The protest centred on Picton player #19, Evan Greer.

Greer received three separate minor penalties for stick infractions during the second period of the game.

Under Hockey Canada rules, a player that receives three stick infraction penalties during the same game is issued an automatic game ejection penalty.

Greer was not ejected from the game and counted one goal and three assists, including a goal and assist in the third period.

As a result, the OHA decided to replay the final 19:47 minutes of the third period of game one.

That is the point in the game where Greer should have been ejected, and would not have figured into Picton’s final two goals.

With the game now in limbo, the series now stands at 1–0 in favour of Essex.

The re-started game will take place on Wednesday, May 1, in Picton.

The remaining games in the series will go ahead a scheduled.
