Police information session at Banting

The Nottawasaga OPP and the Nottawasaga OPP Police Services Board will host an information session on Wednesday May 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Banting Memorial High School Auditorium. This session will focus on current trends in technology, real life problems and solutions for parents and children. You will learn how to address the problems that children face using technology and how these pitfalls lead to cyber-bullying.

Does your child use an iPod, iPad, tablet, laptop, cellular phone, Xbox, PlayStation, DSi or any other electronic device that has wireless capabilities?

Does he/she use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, ask.fm, text, BBM, Skype, FaceTime or use any other medium to communicate with individuals or chat groups on the Internet?

Do you think that by monitoring your child’s Facebook, Twitter and similar accounts on a regular basis, that you are aware of all the online activity that your child is involved in?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need to join us for a parent information session that will focus on these topics and trends.

The guest speaker will be Sgt. Thomas Rich from the New Jersey Police Department.

Sgt. Rich has done almost 500 presentations and spoken to over 100,000 children within the last 5 years. He has become known as the “cyber bullying expert” that is making a difference in the lives of children one school/community at a time.

The presentation will cover the topics of texting, sexting, Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, instagram, omegle, chatroulette, Minecraft and formspring.me. It shows how these forms of technology are affecting our youth everyday and how it is making it easier to be mean to each other. He’ll examine real life examples of cyber-bullying and the dangers of on-line chatting. He will also take an in depth look at Facebook profiles and explain the pitfalls and how to protect yourself and your children through privacy settings. Then the presentation is all tied in showing how these forms of communication can be used in moderation and positively by our youth. He uses entertaining videos, positive solutions and engages the audience with a high energy presentation bringing out incredible results.
