Renegade Derby Dames delight in double header victories

May 9, 2013   ·   0 Comments

The Renegade Derby Dames held their second home event of the 2013 season on Saturday at the Alliston Memorial Arena. The women’s flat track double header event, Brute 4th, was a very successful evening for RDD, with both the Bombshell Battalion and Misfit Militia notching their first wins of the 2013 campaign.

First up was the Bombshell Battalion, 0-2 on the season, taking on the Tata’s of Greater Sudbury Roller Derby. The back and forth first half delighted the crowd as they caught onto the energy of the Battalion. With a slim lead early, the Tata’s gave up a power jam allowing Battalion veterans Keri Daway, who led all scorers with 58 points, and Pink Slamminade to put up 37 points to the Tata’s 4 over that span, giving the Battalion a 25 point lead to work with. The Battalion closed out the half on a 15-2 scoring run from Keri Daway and Monster Muffin, leading 73-51 heading into the locker room.

Something must have been said by the upstart Tata’s coaches at the half, who came out on absolute fire to start the second period.  The Tata’s jammers obtained Lead Jammer Status, a strategic offensive position allowing control over the jam clock, eight out of the first 10 jams, going on a 21-4 run to bring themselves within 6 points of the hometown Battalion. That momentum soon shifted as Monster Muffin came out and put up 9 points in her next jam to turn the tides. Pinky n’ da Pain, captain of the Tata’s, pushed her girls further and further. With walls made of Hipcheck Leddell, Poca Slaughtness, Joni Bitchell and Spellcheck Her, the Tata’s continued to apply pressure to the Battalion jammers.

The score never got closer after that and the Tata’s eventually fell to the Battalion 133-109, despite the best efforts of Tata’s leading scorers Nellie McStung and Low Ride Her with 43 points each. The defense of the Battalion kept the game just out of reach for the Tata’s. Walls built of Battalion skaters Go-Dive-A, CR8N’ KAOS, Jamn’ Taz, Grim Gables and led by team captain Flyin’ O’Brien allowed the Battalion jammers to push through and keep the lead up.

The second bout of the evening was full of many firsts; it was the Misfit Militia’s season debut and the first time an out of province opponent has visited the Renegade Derby Dames in Alliston. The Misfit Militia took on Les Duchesses of Roller Derby Quebec in a physical, spirited affair. The first jam of the game saw Nana Bistouri of Les Duchesses come out quickly to gather Lead Jammer Status and collecting a quick 2 points before the Militia could score. Smoka-Cola of the hometown Militia managed 4 points to get the lead back before heading to penalty box, allowing Lapi Knock U of Les Duchesses to put up a quick 14 points, giving the visiting team an early 16-4 lead. After Zombabe and Smoka-Cola put up 8 points for home team, Randy-Roll-Lin took advantage of an ill-timed penalty by the Duchesses jammer and exploded for 33 points, giving the Militia a 45-20 lead and all of the momentum. Smoka-Cola and Zombabe then combined for another 37 unanswered points turning the offensive tide in favour of the Militia permanently.

Not to be outdone, Les Duchesses turned the bout into a physical chess match, proving themselves to be tough and hearty team by not allowing anything easy for the Militia jammers, despite the difference in score. Led by team captain Feline Dion, Les Duchesses showed the Quebec style of play to the amazing hometown crowd in the Alliston Memorial Arena. With a constant onslaught of big hits by Normonde Glamour, Beat’on the Quads, Booty Allen and Jean Bond, the Militia blockers were busy defending their jammers.

Led by captain Renny Rumble, the Militia blockers never got away from their style of defensive play. Line ups including Dezz STROYHer, BelleFast (in a rare pivot role), Terry Bomb and newcomers Red Hot, Stringer and Mad Cow Tipper continued to return every big hit Les Duchesses could throw at them and allowed the Militia jammers to score seemingly at will, with Randy-Roll-Lin leading all scorers with an incredible 128 points followed by Smoka-Cola and Zombabe, who combined for another 117 to put the game out of reach for visiting team out of Quebec City.

The victories for both hometown teams should propel them moving forward in the young derby season. The Bombshells Battalion will next be in Fergus on May 25th to take on the Fergus Feims before returning home to take on Violet Uprising of the Royal City Roller Girls (Guelph). The Misfit Militia’s next contest will take place in tournament form as they head to Windsor to take part in the Roller Derby Association of Canada’s Eastern regional Tournament on June 15th & 16th. The Misfit Militia enter the tournament as the first overall seed.

Brute 4th was a very successful evening for RDD, supported by many sponsors, volunteers and most importantly the growing and steady fan base, which continues to welcome their favourite Derby Dames time and time again.
