Last Thursday, June 12th, Renew New Tecumseth – a Town project that brightens darkened storefronts with innovative start-up businesses for a small weekly lease payment – welcomed Creative Arts & Music at 8 Main Street in Beeton.
Owned by William (Bill) Joyce and his wife Shirley, Creative Arts offers music lessons and art lessons for all ages and range of abilities. The business also features a gallery of art by Mr. Joyce and accomplished artist Geja Upham. Down the road, the Joyce’s hope to also carry a line of cash-and-carry art supplies and ornamental items, such as artisan crafts and hand-made jewellery.
The Joyce’s have committed to a 30-day rolling lease under the Renew program with property owner Kelly Gruber at $25 per week (increases every three months), plus a percentage of their gross sales. The Joyce’s will have first right of refusal if they wish to establish a business in that location long-term.
Renew New Tecumseth is responsible for securing 5 long-term leases in New Tecumseth over the past 20 months and over $65,000 in capital improvements to our downtown cores. The concept, which originated in Australia, has caught on locally and neighbouring municipalities are considering a similar concept to keep the downtown cores bright, landlords happy and local businesses booming.
