SCDSB schools receive over $78,000 for Parents Reaching Out projects

Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) school councils have been granted more than $78,000 this school year to connect with parents through the Ministry of Education’s Parents Reaching Out (PRO) Grants for School Councils and PRO Grants for Regional Projects.

Individual school councils apply for PRO Grants to support initiatives that focus on ways to further engage parents in their child’s education. These projects feature topics of relevance to each school community, including homework help, social media information sessions and family literacy events. In total, this year SCDSB school councils are receiving $45,231 in funding for 47 school-based projects.

PRO Grants for Regional Projects are available to various community groups, non-profit organizations and educational systems to create more opportunities to work with parents as partners.

This year, the SCDSB has been awarded two regional grants. ‘Empowered Parents, Successful Students’ will provide information to parents via a handbook, presentation and video about the options available in secondary school and how to support teens through the transition. The ‘Circle of Learning’ Parent Conference is a free event for SCDSB parents to learn more about local education through keynote speakers, workshops and community partners. This year’s ‘Circle of Learning’ conference takes place on Saturday, April 5, 2014.

Further details on PRO programs can be found on the Ministry of Education’s website at http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/parents/reaching.html
