Most elementary schools concluded the 2013–2014 year last Friday. Although this is great news for children, it means adults have to be extra careful on the roads. With an increased amount of pedestrian and bicycle traffic on the streets the local OPP is reminding residents to drive with care, especially near parks and recreation centres. “When coming upon bicycles give them space,” reads a press release from the OPP. “Slow down, and keep an eye out for children playing near the street.” OPP is also asking parents to speak with their children, reminding them about road safety and the rules of the road. “Remind them of pedestrian rules when walking and crossing the streets. Bicycle helmets are the law for those under 18,” says the OPP. Parents should also lead by example wearing their own helmet at all times. Sticking together can also prevent injury and increase response rate times should an accident occur. “The buddy system is always best. Children are carefree, not careless. Let’s do our part in keeping them safe,” reads the police issued report. The Times wishes you and yours a happy, healthy and safe summer!
