The South Simcoe Police Service offers these tips for selling a vehicle online:
• Never ride along with the person who is test driving your vehicle and never agree to an unreasonable test drive length.
• Always obtain identification, including a driver’s licence from the person test driving your vehicle and make a copy.
• Never meet potential buyers/sellers alone.
• Be suspicious of anyone who walks to the location of the test drive. If they leave a vehicle behind, check it to make sure there is no one hiding in it with another set of keys to drive it away when they have your vehicle.
• Copy down the licence plate of any vehicle the potential purchaser is driving.
• Never chase anyone who you believe is trying to steal your vehicle. Let it go and call police.
• Do not give out your personal information until the deal is closing.
• Keep your vehicle insured until you sell it, if some is trying to steal it, let it go, it is insured.
• Accept cash, bank draft or money order. Call to verify all non-cash sales with the bank. Certified cheques, bank drafts and money orders can be fraudulent. Watch for counterfeit cash.
• Never accept unreasonable terms of sale or payment plans. Never accept over payment for a vehicle, it may be a scam.
• Trust your instincts.
