Dr. Kellie Leitch, Member of Parliament for Simcoe–Grey, was invited to join the delegation of Canadian Parliamentarians to attend the new Pope’s first Mass today at the Vatican. Last Thursday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that His Excellency, the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, would travel with Canadian Parliamentarians to Vatican City to attend the Mass celebrating the inauguration of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina as Pope Francis. “This is a tremendous day for Catholics all over the world. On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I congratulate His Holiness Pope Francis. I am humbled to have been asked to represent Canada and my constituents of Simcoe–Grey at the inaugural Mass of Pope Francis” said Dr. Leitch. The inaugural Mass celebrated by Pope Francis was held in St Peter’s Square, marking the official beginning of his papacy. Pope Francis toured the square in an open-topped vehicle, descending to bless pilgrims. His homily called on global leaders, and all people of the world, to serve and protect the weak and the poor. His Holiness Pope Francis was chosen as Bishop of Rome and Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, the 265th Successor of Peter, on March 13. His Holiness is the first Jesuit pope, and the first Pope from the Americas. Pope Francis is a man who has dedicated his life to serving God and all of humanity. Canada and the Holy See share a commitment to the promotion of the dignity of human beings and the freedom of conscience and religion.
