Sledge Hockey program gets a boost from local sponsors

The Town of New Tecumseth Parks, Recreation and Culture Department is pleased to have received a boost from local sponsors to enable accessible, barrier-free recreation to continue to be a priority.

Sponsors have been received to ensure the new Sledge Hockey program continues to be available. Sledge hockey allows all abilities including special needs participants to experience sport and learn new skills. As an original team sport, sledge hockey incorporates the same rules and discipline structure as traditional ice hockey. Sledge hockey players sit on specially designed sleds, or ‘sledges,’ with skate blades under the seat. Players use two sticks to pass, stickhandle and shoot the puck, and also to propel and maneuver their sledges.

“This is not an inexpensive endeavor to undertake, however, it is a worthwhile one, benefiting all residents of the Town of New Tecumseth and surrounding communities,” said Wendy Rowland, Senior Supervisor Recreation and Community Services.

With the equipment on a short term loan, the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department sought sponsorships from interested businesses and organizations so ensure the program could continue by raising enough funds to purchase sleds for the children to access. Each sled with adjustable extension and 2 sticks costs $650 per child.

Five businesses have generously sponsored six sleds including Milligan Fuels Ltd., Egan’s Campground Inc., Mulmur Stone Inc., Grit Inc. and Extreme Impression Truck, Equipment & Trailer Maintenance. Additional businesses and organizations are now being challenged to join the existing sponsors to help meet the initial target of 20 sleds.

“Our initial fundraising target of 20 sleds and sticks valued at $13,000 is a viable goal with your support.

The children of our community, the Town of New Tecumseth and our partners thank you for your generous support and consideration,” Rowland said.

Jump Start has supported the purchase of helmets and cages. In addition, members of the Canadian Paralympics team have been volunteering their time and expertise to assist the 20 children registered to build their skill levels. Children’s Treatment Network and Catulpa Community Support Services have also partnered with the Town of New Tecumseth Parks Recreation and Culture to enhance services and opportunities for children and families with special needs.
