More than 60 Simcoe County District School Board secondary school students are participating in specialized summer cooperative education this July and August.
Students are taking part in two-credit high school programs such as Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), and are working at various businesses and organizations throughout Simcoe County. The program is based out of the Barrie, Orillia and Midland Learning Centres and runs until August 16.
“Students have the opportunity to learn outside the classroom while gaining high school credits,” says Ian Platt, Program Coordinator. “It’s a unique experience that is a win-win for students and employers as it integrates classroom theory and learning experiences at a workplace.”
This summer, students have placements at employers such as Casino Rama, Fern Resort, Horseshoe Resort, Midland Physiotherapy, the Ministry of Natural Resources, OSPCA, R&F Construction (Orillia), Stevenson Memorial Hospital and YMCA Midland.
