Sunday Music a wrap for the season

Tottenham’s Sunday Music in the Park wrapped up its 2013 summer session with a  crowd pleasing performance by the Vinyl Groove band.

This summer the schedule featured seven shows throughout the summer by bands of all different genres.

Organizer George Scott said he hopes the crowds will continue to grow looking ahead to next year.

“This has been an exceptional crowd today. We were at around 150 people and we’re hoping it can keep growing from this,” he said. “It has been going pretty good and the crowds have been growing. We tried to use it as a complimentary show to Alliston’s evening show at Riverdale Park.”

Next year Scott said organizers are thinking of adding an eighth show and are looking for bands and groups from Simcoe County and area that can be a part of next year’s schedule.

More importantly, Scott said the event is something that brings the community together and gives families something fun to do on a Sunday afternoon.

“It is really important to community and that’s what really struck a chord with the town, because they’ve been trying to research ideas to getting people out and enjoying the community,” he said, also noting that the event has helped rejuvenate the stage and the park.

“Russell Kelly, my co-founder, had the idea to get some music down here and see if we could revitalize the town a little bit. The first year was not a full-time endeavor, so this is the second full season and we approached the town and they just jumped right on board.

“Russell, he’s kind of the creative guy. He gathered nine art students together a few years ago and took 35 hours over a weekend doing this mural here,” he said.

Once the plan was in place, Scott and Kelly went to town to get approval and support and then went out and found some great local sponsors that have helped get the event off the ground.

However, to keep the program growing, Scott said more sponsors will be needed.

“We are definitely in need of sponsors,” he said.
