Dear editor:
It is not enough for our Senators in Ottawa to say, “I got a little mixed up with my accounting and I’m sorry if the Canadian public thinks I shafted them for tens of thousands of dollars.”
The Senators who are ill with the failed-accounting-sydrome should be turfed out after they find and pay-back the money they owe taxpayers.
There are rules and regulations for the Senators. Some rules may be a little obscure and seem very tiresome to the Senators, but there are new and explicit ones. The rules must he followed and our honest Senators do just that! They know that any trip or expense which is not related to their senatorial duties cannot he claimed. Is there a Ottawa fog which descends on some Senators when trying to find the right column to put their pencils into play?
Those Senators who have ‘bent the rules’ now have placed an extra burden on the Canadian taxpayer. Senate committees, forensic accounting and, eventually, police investigations cost thousands of dollars. We wouldn’t have these costs if all the Senators obeyed the rules.
Thankfully, most Senators are honest and adhere to the rules. We must give them credit and thank them for their work on behalf of Canadians.
The honest and dishonest Senators will now be investigated by the Auditor-General. He will look at their accounting. After his work, maybe we should declare a day-of-mourning if the results are worse than we envisioned.
Is the country ready for a day-of-mourning if further revelations come forth to indicate elected or appointed public officials have a propensity for ‘fun with figures’?
