Residents of New Tecumseth, including commercial farmer Walter Davidson, owner of WD Potato Ltd. (pictured above at the podium), presented their concerns to council Monday night over plans to complete a section of the Trans Canada Trail through New Tecumseth – and effectively through their properties. Davidson, who operates a 15,000 acre potato farm just in Beeton, says he’s at risk of losing customers if the trail goes through as planned. “Trails are okay, but not in our area,” he said. Several other farmers/property owners, including Bob Reynolds, Ross Reynolds, Mark McKnight, Glen O’Leary and Amanda Allen, also came forward to express their concerns, which included health and safety issues, insurance questions, restrictions on future outbuildings boarding the trail, parking for trail users, emergency services access, trail maintenance costs, irrigation pipelines and overspray, trespassing and damage to crops and livestock. Ward 5 Councillor Donna Jebb gave an impassioned speech to council urging them to change the trail route – from farmers’ fields to along the roadways. Council, who approved the investment (a 20km extension to the Trans Canada Trail) last year has directed staff to look at alternate routes before federal funding runs out to complete the project.
