The newly formed yet highly skilled TNT Super 6 team sponsored by Briway Carriers travelled to Pickering this past weekend to take on some incredibly talented teams from all over the province. The goal was to compete hard, have fun, and prove once and for all that the select 6 division should be a part of our already All-star organization.
The first game saw these young stars match up against the high flying Hawks from Caledon. Having seen them play a couple of weeks earlier, we knew that this would be a battle from puck drop.
In the first, it was all lil’ twisters as they blew past the birds on every shift. Halfway through the first, the stars were rewarded on a great three person play from Taylor Smith to Jacob English who found Jacob “the Juggernaut” Jackson who rifled it home. 1–0 after one.
In the second, the birds began to hunt as they came in waves at our dynamic duo of Luca “A-mmmazing” Moras and Gregory “Game Savers” Prock. After the plethora of shots and the smoke cleared, the Hawks tied the game at the end of the frame. 1–1 after two.
In the third, it was all end to ender’s as it was anyone’s game. With a minute fourteen left on the clock “Juggernaut” Jackson snapped one home to give us the lead on passes from English and Meagan Houle. Eleven seconds later, Houle fed Blake Cubello who snapped a seeing eye shot to “the Energizer” English who made no mistake and sealed the deal. A magical moment as the game was in hand. Queue the Copperfield and make the final 3–1 good side.
The second tilt of the tourney saw the team wake before some slept as they travelled to the arena to take on the Acton Chargers. A win would almost guarantee a place in the A-final.
On the very first shift, Anthony MacDonald won the draw to Nate Holmes. After a fight for the puck, Jake “the Master” MacSween picked up the pass and sniped bar down. Second shift in, Chloe Taylor passed over to Ethan Frost who found “the Juggernaut” Jackson who made the game 2–0 Stars. Then late in the first “Juggernaut” struck again on a pass from English and Eryk Ostrowski. 3–1 after the first.
The second saw more dominance by these young phenoms as they kept the puck down low and started to work the cycle. The first to snipe was “the Master” MacSween on passes from Holmes and Macdonald. Then it was the “Juggernaut” completing the bonnet for a birthday trick (not magic, Copperfield) on a tic-tac-toe from Houle and Max Gough. To end the frame, “the Energizer” English capped it off on passes from Jackson and Frost. 6–1 after two.
With the game in hand, and a potential of being penalized for running up the score, the stars passed around and were content with the 6–1 final as they all skated to the room with incredible confidence and a desire to win.
The second of the day and the final of round robin saw the Twisters take on the Kings of the County (Prince Edward of course). If the Kings won, it would give three teams a tie at the top of the charts and the dreaded plus minus would come into play. The message to our stars was simple. Work hard.
As the game started, a fast little star from PEC broke free. If it was not for “A-mmmmazing” Moras to make the save, the game could have definitely ended different. After that momentum changer, the Twisters began to turn as they scored early and often. First Anthony “Awesome” MacDonald from Holmes and MacSween. Then “Energizer” English from Houle and Jackson. Next was “Juggernaut” Jackson from Houle and Frost. 3–0 after one.
In the second it was all superstars as they snapped in four more. Goals from “Awesome” MacDonald, Ryerson “Hot Shot” Harvey-Dick, “Juggernaut” Jackson and “the Master” Macsween. 7–0 Twisters. Assists on these four from Holmes, MacDonald, Macsween, Taylor Smith, English, Kallum Southwood, Gough and Cal Virtue-McCague. Make the final 7–2 Stars. A win that secured the top seed heading into the unexpected but well earned A-final. Let’s have a party!
The final game saw the team in a rematch versus the Caledon Hawks in what was sure to be an all out battle. With warm-up underway, the anxious crowd erupted hoping that the winning ways would continue. At the drop of the puck, the Hawks were also ready to win as they scored not once but twice to take a commanding 2–0 lead. Late in the frame that lead was cut in half on a great go to the netter by “Juggernaut” Jackson by English and Houle. 2–1 after one.
In the second, our young stars showed more heart as they never gave up and were rewarded on a goal by “Make no Mistake” Houle from Jackson and English. Tie game.
With the Hawks answering back to take the lead, our little engines that could, did and answered right back. Goal by “the Energizer” English from Jackson and Cubello. 3–3 after two.
In the final frame, it was anybody’s game as a small mistake could have ended up in the net. Instead of hanging back waiting for a miscue, The TNT Super Six Stars decided to take matters into their own hands. All three lines firing on all cylinders. Shot after shot. Chance after chance. Pushed away by the Caledon keeper. Then with three minutes to play the break that was needed as “Hot Shot” Harvey-Dick buried one on assists from Virtue-McCague and Southwood. A minute and a half later “Juggernaut” Jackson put the game to rest (or so we thought) to establish a two goal lead with just over a minute remaining. Assists from English and Smith. With the Hawk keeper pulled, they did not go quietly as Caledon scored with 31 seconds left in the game to come within one. With our parents in panic, the puck was dropped at centre ice. Some back and forth battling but in the end it was not to be as our Stars dumped it deep and took the game. What a victory! What a finish! Make the final 5–4 TNT. What an amazing way to end the year and so much improvement. You are all “Stars” to us.
