Tottenham resident, Ian Bellis (with Samantha Chevrier) represented Canadore College in North Bay in the recent ‘Great Amazing Duck Race’.
During the Ducks Race, teams of culinary students from ten colleges in Ontario competing for three prizes given out by King Cole Ducks Limited.
This is the second year of the King Cole Great Amazing Duck Race, and ten teams consisting of two second year culinary students from various community colleges in Ontario were selected to compete in the competition. The event started at 6 a.m. this past Saturday at the King Cole farms in Aurora and ended at 6 p.m. that evening at George Brown College in Toronto.
The race starts with the students collecting duck eggs from the breeder farm in Cedar Valley, so the students have an idea of what farm life is all about. They then move to the production room in Newmarket where each team is given four ducks and the team must remove the skin and bones to come up with final duck product that will be used later in the day at George Brown college for the teams pre-selected menu. After this process, the teams board a bus and are transported to the Finch/Yonge subway where they ride to Union Station and from their run to St. Lawrence market to pick up the ingredients [$25 limit] for their duck menu. From St. Lawrence market the students run to George Brown college culinary labs where they will be given back their four ducks that they worked on and prepared back at the production room in Newmarket. Each team has a different menu, and each menu consists of an appetizer and entrée. The students change into their kitchen attire and now start cooking. The entire competition is based on set times for each phase of the race, just like in a real restaurant situation, the teams must complete their prep work, cooking and final presentation in an allotted time period.
Once the final dishes are presented, they along with how well the students did in the various stages/phases of the Duck Race are judged.
Unfortunately the team of Ian and Samantha did not place in the top three, but they had fun nonetheless.
