It was standing room only on Saturday night at the Tottenham Community Fitness Centre with more than 300 people in attendance for the inagural game of the ‘Tottenham Steam’ Jr. ‘A’ hockey team. The Steam come out on top in their first ever game in the Greater Metro Hockey League with a 7–5 over the Bradford Bulls.
The game was tied at three after the first period with Bradford getting the lone second period goal to make it a 4–3 game going into the final 20 minutes.
It was the last period that made all the difference for the Steam when Valery Ledovsky tied the game at four with an early goal at the 2:59 mark into the frame.
The Steam went ahead on a powerplay goal from Brandon Gaudette.
Bradford notched a single at the midway mark.
The Steam returned with two more goals when Ferdinando Colella fired the puck off the face off to beat the Bulls goalie and Stevie Atkinson scored at 15:30 to seal the deal and put their digit in the ‘W’ column.
“The guys put it together in the third period,” said Steam head coach Ryan Wood. “We figured out some good line combos. It was good to see the guys starting move the puck and do the little things – getting the pucks deep, getting it across the blue line – once they started doing that they really started to control the play a lot.”
This is the first time Tottenham has had a Junior level club and the arena was packed. Some where there out of curiosity to see what the League is all about, others are just die-hard hockey fans that are glad there is a Junior club in town.
The Steam management did a good job of promoting the club over the summer and that created a buzz around town.
“The fans came out in bunches. Colleen (Rideout – director of community relations) did a great job of promoting our team. We hope the people continue to support us. We’re going to take a run here and try to win a Russel cup and bring it to Tottenham.”
The Steam will be back on home ice on Saturday, September 20, when they host the Grey Highlands Bravehearts at the Tottenham Community Centre.
The puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
