The Town is seeking public input on the future of an off-leash dog park in Alliston.

Hillcrest Park, located at Cowen Ave. and Park Street, was controversial when it was first opened for dog owners to let their canines run free.

Residents in the area complained that the park was too large, lacked parking areas, and created issues with smells and increased traffic on their streets.

They also said there was no notice given to nearby residents that the area was being planned for an off-leash park, and they only found out once the fences were being put into place.

After complaints, the Town put a ‘pause’ on construction and polled residents in the area.

A meeting was held at the park and attended by a local councillor, who said he thought it was “too big” for an off-leash park.

After debate, it was decided the off-leash park would remain. However, it would be reduced in size.

As a follow-up, the Town of New Tecumseth is conducting a survey to solicit public consultation from residents in the area.

You can take part in the survey by going online at: s.surveryplanet.com/3ppmz3bo or through a QR Code listed on the town’s website on the Hillcrest Dog Park Survey page.

The survey will be open until Monday, June 5, at 11:45 p.m.
