The Town of New Tecumseth has agreed to offset the costs of re-lettering the Tottenham Cenotaph.
Royal Canadian Legion Branch #329 members appealed for councils help on the matter, with quotes estimating $5,000 to complete the job.
Branch representative Tom McDonald told council that the Legion had already begun fundraising efforts and had $1,250 to contribute to the project.
Council has agreed to pay the balance of $3,750 to refurbish the monument in Keogh Park.
As it stands now, the names of veterans painted on the cenotaph are “washing of”. Veterans honoured include those who served in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War.
Restoration work on the 94-year-old monument (erected in August, 1920) should be complete this summer – in time to honour the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I and the Tottenham Legion’s 70th anniversary.
