Town upgrading street lights

October 9, 2015   ·   0 Comments

The Town of New Tecumseth is moving forward with its Energy Infrastructure Renewal Program with Honeywell Limited that will focus on Town-wide LED streetlighting upgrades.
There are approximately 2,286 streetlights in New Tecumseth that will be upgraded as part of this program. The first stage of the streetlighting upgrades are expected to get underway on October 15 and be completed by the end of November. This includes the installation of 36 sample LED streetlights in the following locations:
Beeton – Bateman and Wright streets Alliston- John W. Taylor Avenue
Tottenham – Fraser Avenue and Hammell Boulevard
The initial locations have been selected for the installation of test fixtures from various streetlighting manufacturers. Streetlights will be chosen based on technical considerations to determine which will be best for use in the Energy Infrastructure Improvement Program throughout New Tecumseth.
In working with Honeywell Limited to execute the program, the colours of the new bulbs may appear different than the existing illumination as we transition to LED technology. LED bulbs operate using less electricity and have a longer life than our current bulbs. They also produce even temperature and white light ensuring that colours are as vivid as they appear during daylight hours. The new LED fixtures are dark sky compliant and produce light that does not project skyward or outside the roadway and toward residences.
These steps are intended to improve the Town’s energy efficiency and reduce our environmental footprint. When the project is completed, the upgrades are expected to reduce the Town’s annual energy and operating costs by more than $237,000.
