The Town of New Tecumseth has issued a warning about a scam regarding Town parking tickets.

Residents have inquired at Town Hall about text messages they are receiving regarding unpaid parking tickets.

These types of scams typically include e-mails or texts, sometimes with a logo appearing official, telling people that they have outstanding parking tickets that must be paid. Usually, the message includes a threat if not paid immediately.

The message will then have a link indicating where a person can pay the outstanding fine online through various means. However, the link is not to a Town facility.

A warning has been issued that these messages are not from the Town, and are a scam.

If you receive such a message, do not click on the link provided.

If you do have an outstanding parking ticket, the Town will mail a notice to your home. It does not send messages regarding payments.

This type of scam is part of a wide array of online frauds where people are told they owe money and must pay up immediately to avoid the consequences.

If you receive an e-mail or text requesting payment from any type of organization, do not click on the links for payment, and delete the e-mail.
