Truck traffic in Beeton a concern for the Town

August 31, 2013   ·   0 Comments

Dear editor:

I am writing in response to the letter “Main Street Beeton” printed Thursday August 22nd. I’d like to set the record straight with regard to efforts being made to address traffic issues in Beeton. We are listening to our residents and working in collaboration with the OPP and MTO to address community concerns. The OPP and MTO have conducted truck blitzes and are giving tickets, fines and removing trucks off the road on a regular basis.

Our staff and elected officials have spoken to local industries and trucking companies to request them to reroute traffic away from Beeton where feasible. The need for traffic signalization in Beeton was reviewed as part of the Class Environmental Assessment for the Beeton Master Servicing Plan, which was approved by Council (as resolution 2010-165 dated August 30, 2010). In anticipation of future growth and traffic patterns, the recommended location for traffic signalization was identified as the intersection of Main Street and Tecumseth Street.

Staff will continue to monitor traffic conditions in the community, especially as development proceeds, and work with the OPP and MTO to address concerns.

Regarding the unfortunate accident that occurred on August 16th,  according to the OPP,  records indicate that the call for assistance was received at 6:05 p.m., police officers were dispatched and arrived on scene at 6:28 p.m. Emergency personnel records also indicate that New Tecumseth Fire Rescue volunteers were onsite quickly and together with members of our community assisted the victim until police arrived.

Mayor Mike MacEachern
