Tuck traffic must be addressed in Beeton

Dear editor:

Re: letter sent to Beeton Councillor, Richard Norcross

I just heard a very disturbing story of a lady being seriously injured at Center and Main last night. What really makes this so alarming is the fact that she lay bleeding on the roadway and the trucks using our Main St. as a short-cut narrowly missing her. The truck drivers failed to slow down with no concern for the seriousness of the situation. 1 or 2 good samaritans tried to slow down and divert truck and car traffic around the accident but to no avail making the well being of this person even more serious.  Main Street has become more and more a transport speedway. I was led to believe that Industrial Pkwy. was designed to divert truck traffic due east from Alliston to 400 hwy. so that Beeton and Tottenham still had a safe environment for our children and seniors. I guess industry comes first, then safety of our residents.

Every day I walk my dog on Main Street from Willow to the post office and back and I have counted as many as 8 trucks at any given time. These trucks may be cement, dump or 53’ tractor trailers. Beeton is getting too much truck traffic especially tractor trailers associated with Honda. This must stop before a Beeton resident is killed. If these trucks were passing your door you would be singing a different tune. Please address this immediately!

There are many Beeton residents who have similar views on this situation.

Fred Ekins,

Beeton

Note: The Times contacted Councillor Norcross. This was his reply:

I spoke with Fred after receiving an email from him on the weekend.

I have advised Fred of the following:

The Town has sent letters to the local industries and trucking companies for them to use the industrial routes that have been provided for them and to refrain from going through the village.

In conjunction with the OPP over the past few months there have been numerous truck blitzes conducted in Beeton.

I have been advised by the OPP that they have issued numerous tickets, fines and have had trucks removed from our streets. I have been advised by the OPP that this enforcement will continue forward and into the future. I also advised Fred that I will continue to work with the Town and the OPP on minimizing the truck traffic through Beeton.
