Warden’s column: Night at the Museum Warden

The Simcoe County Museum is one of our region’s greatest treasures. The County takes tremendous pride in the work our Museum staff executes to preserve our area’s history for current and future generations.

The Simcoe County Museum was created in 1928 by Women’s Institute members Mrs. C.P. Stocking and Mrs. R.A. Sutherland. In the 1950s, the County of Simcoe took responsibility for the collection, and over the years, the Simcoe County Museum has grown significantly, and is now a five gallery facility, featuring more than 30,000 artifacts, and sixteen outdoor heritage and display buildings.

The Museum is open to the public seven days a week and offers a number of events, camps and programs. There’s no better way to learn about our region and connect with our history then to spend time at the Simcoe County Museum taking part in an educational experience. Enrolment into unique summer programs is now open. I encourage you to visit their website museum.simcoe.ca or drop in to learn more.

One of my favourite events hosted by the County is the annual Night at the Museum fundraising event. This year the theme is “A Night of Mystery and Intrigue” and runs on Thursday, May 29, 2014. Eight feature artifacts from the Museum’s extensive collection have been selected and guests will hear two plausible descriptions for each artifact. Participants will have the opportunity to question our Guest Curators in an effort to decide which of the descriptions is true and which is false. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres are all part of this special evening at the Museum.

Tickets are on sale now for $75 per ticket or $400 for six. To register, visit simcoe.ca/dpt/ltc/fundraising/ or contact Simcoe County at 705 726-9300.

Proceeds raised from the Night at the Museum will support the Georgian Village Fundraising Campaign, and will be used to help complete major projects including the Village Woodworking area, Fitness Room and Therapeutic Pool, and Georgian Blooms Greenhouse. Georgian Village is the County’s new seniors lifestyle community situated in the Town of Penetanguishene. With a focus on aging-in-place, Georgian Village campus offers a continuum of housing options that will help seniors find the kind of care they need for whatever stage of life they are in. The County of Simcoe operates four long-term care homes across the County.

I hope you can join us for Night at the Museum on May 29, 2014.

Cal Patterson, Warden, County of Simcoe
