Dear editor:
In follow-up to the sham of a meeting sponsored by the Town of New Tecumseth on Thursday September 4, 2014 in the Beeton Library; did you really think we were interested in looking at 5 year old plans which would give us some relief to the truck traffic by maybe 2020.
We were there, strong in numbers with alternatives to discuss to be told that this was to be a workshop to look at arial view pictures of Beeton…come on council.
We see them every day; Gibson’s, Inland Iron and Metal, XTL, Kingswood and overloaded Dump trucks (with attached ponies) too many to mention, take over the main streets of what was once a safe, quiet, tranquil village.
About a year ago, a number of concerned citizens appealed to Richard Norcross to help protect our streets after two people were seriously injured crossing the street. To his favour, he did arrange a safety blitz and a stop sign put up at the corner of Main and Tecumseth…which came down in less than a month and we now have a sign warning truck driver’s to not use “jake brakes” in town…but guess what no one is there to enforce it.
Home Owners expressed outrage and damage to their home’s foundation as let’s face it…the last time that the infrastructure of the roads was updated was more than 40 years ago…and we have an aged sewage system just waiting to self-destruct. Over the past two years, I have witnessed Main Street actually sink about two inches, with long deep cracks and crevices growing like a web across the street. We can only imagine the unseen damage occurring underground.
As tax payers we paid for the industrial parkway which was supposed to be designed to handle Honda truck traffic; now looks like we are on the hook again to repair Main Street, Dayfoot and Danielle and if no-one remembers Dayfoot used to be a dead end road because it was a swamp.
Well; as the meeting clearly showed, we are fed-up taking the back seat all the time to the needs of Alliston and how did Tottenham manage to get 4 traffic lights in less than a mile to reduce truck traffic.
Concerned Beeton citizens…we need to fight…we want 24/7 police presence to ticket these overweight rigs. We want surprise weight and safety checks done on a minimum of once a month. We want overloaded dump trucks off community streets where children play. We want a stop sign at Dayfoot and Main. We want the big rigs ticketed for speeding and other bylaw offences. We want a committed councillor to make this happen in 2014.
Diane Frith,
Beeton
